Balance

Balance ensures our stories are fair. 

When able we always offer subjects a reasonable right of reply. Stories should always be fair and balanced, with representation from more than one side of an issue when possible. We also balance the public’s interest in knowing a story, vs the negative impact of sharing the story. 

We are aware of and refrain from “false balance”, unproven claims are not given equal weight as established fact for the sake of divergence of views. The Journalist should strive to tell the full truth including context, but devoid of bias or impartiality.

Journalists should always be transparent and disclose any relevant facts that may be perceived as affecting their reporting on a story. Similarly, and limits they faced in preparing the story should be explained clearly.

Journalists should remain impartial at all times. We remain neutral, impartial and free from biases. We use professionalism and sound judgement to present facts, and avoid advancing specific viewpoints.
