Crime Reporting

When the police recommend a charge to Crown Counsel we do not publish the name of the accused.

If a charge is approved by Crown Counsel we weigh the severity of the accusation against the privacy rights of the individual before deciding whether to name a person.

If an individual pleads guilty to or is convicted of a crime they may be named without hesitation.

Children and youth who are arrested, charged, and who plead guilty or are convicted of a crime are never named pursuant to Canadian Law.

We respect all laws on the restriction of publication of information, and we also respect all court imposed publication bans. Our Journalists have an obligation to be aware of these restrictions, and exercise diligence to ensure no direct or indirect information is published that could violate these orders or the spirit of the orders. If we disagree with an order or ban or limit, we shall pursue a remedy through the legal system, while at the same time respecting the conditions set out in them.
